The Maldivian government has on Tuesday decided to introduce a ‘Green Tax’ which would be levied on tourists.
“Levying this tax is necessary given Maldives’ fragile environment” said Minister of Tourism Ahmed Adheeb “Revenue generated from the tax will go in to managing the waste from local resorts and other islands”.
The Minister further said that the government would discuss the logistics of levying the tax with businesses in the local tourism sector before introducing the tax. The amount to be levied is yet undecided.
Adheeb added that the government will propose a bill on the tax within this month with the hope of being able to implement it by 2015.
The Green Tax was accounted for in the estimated state budget for 2015. The government had also increased the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (T-GST) from eight to 12 percent.
